The Origin of the Feces is the second album by Type O Negative, released on May 12, 1992.
Recording and production
The liner note said this album was recorded in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn on Halloween of 1991, but it contradicts the fuller title The Origin Of The Feces (Not Live At Brighton Beach). The album was actually recorded in Systems Two Recording Studio a few miles from Brighton Beach, but produced to sound as if it had been recorded at a live show by adding crowd noises, banter with the fictitious audience, and even a song stopping because the venue supposedly had received a bomb threat. This was done to simulate some controversy the band had during the Slow, Deep and Hard tour in Europe. The band is well-known among fans for weaving this dry humor into their often gloomy music.
Some fans say this is a fake live album and don't consider it their second studio album, instead they say that their next album, Bloody Kisses, is their second studio album (instead of their third), October Rust is their third (instead of their fourth), etc.
Album content
The following songs on this album are arrangements of the tracks on Slow, Deep and Hard:
- "I Know You're Fucking Someone Else" is an arrangement of "Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity",
- "Gravity" is an arrangement of "Gravitational Constant: G = 6.67 × 10−8 cm−3 gm−1 sec−2",
- "Pain" is an arrangement of "Prelude to Agony", and
- "Kill You Tonight" and the reprise are arrangements of "Xero Tolerance".
The song "Are You Afraid" is an original, non-arranged version that the band played live but had never recorded in the studio. This song points towards the gothic sound developed on their next album Bloody Kisses.
This album also started the tradition of Type O Negative including cover songs stylized in their distinct gothic metal sound. The album includes the reissue bonus track "Paranoid" that was taken from the Black Sabbath's song of the same name but not a cover (which contains the main riff of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" around three minutes into the song), and Billy Roberts' "Hey Joe", which has been adapted into "Hey Pete" for frontman Peter Steele. The reprise of "Kill You Tonight" has a sample of the closing piano strike from The Beatles' "A Day in the Life".
Album cover
The original cover of the album has a closeup of Steele's anal sphincter. Due to the profanity, the re-issue released two years later has a different cover, showing a green and black version of the 1493 painting by Michael Wolgemut, The Dance of Death. The album's title is an obvious pun and a reference to Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species.
In addition to the re-issue's cover, other artwork included in the album's sleeve/liner notes is the famous 1498 woodcut by Albrecht Dürer, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Reviews
- Nima Tayebian of Rock and Metal in My Blood (8/10) – "The album is a mirror of Steele's sarcasm."
- Simple Anime Reviews & Facts (3–4/10) – "This is the black sheep of Type-O Negative albums. The pretend sound effects make the whole "live" concert sound quite believable, but it sounds too much like Slow, Deep and Hard."
